On January 28th, 2012, Jim wrote the following note of remembrance to Diane Kniss

Dick Kniss
Dick Kniss

Dear Diane,

I am so sad to hear of Dick passing. It has been wonderful remembering all the times I got to hang in the same orbit with Dick and you and play music with him. I will always remember the first time I met him at the Red Rocks in 1972 - I was 16--- this feeling is 40 years of respect for the best bass player for our kind of music. I will always remember your cookies.

I will also remember being a Sr. in high school hearing a story from Brian Schrack that cutie Donna Maxll from my class went to say goodbye to the JD boys at Kearney Nebraska Airport ---- she turned to Dick and said "Dick ..... you're such a real person...... and Dick replied "Yes.... I know" I never laughed so hard .... and I cried last night singing Sunshine for people at a special fund raiser in Breckenridge for Breckenridge Music Institute. I told them the story of the "most valuable bass player" photo on the back of PP&M tour book from the late 60's? and 70's.- what a loving....lovely person......

I love you Dick. I will miss you and that beautiful style on the bass.

I love you Diane....I'll be calling soon.

And thinking of all of you tomorrow at the memorial.

Guitar with Moon

"I wish everyone could have their very best friend...near them,
their children...near them,
a good night's sleep,
a great book,
an old Martin guitar,
a new Martin guitar,
a nice red wine,
the bills paid,
and a clean Jeep....
and now (drum roll)....an old sports car...for the hasty retreat..."
